BBC And Top Gear Smacked With Lawsuit By Tesla Motors

Tesla Motors is suing the BBC, alleging the hosts of a BBC program, “Top Gear,” committed libel in a show dealing with Tesla vehicles. The show aired an episode a while ago that had a review of the Tesla Roadster, which the company alleges broadcast malicious and false claims about the car to the company’s detriment. The British Broadcasting Corporation is vigorously denying the allegations.

Clarkson does not amuse Tesla Motors

In Dec. 2008, popular English automotive-related show “Top Gear” aired an episode on BBC2 in which the hosts put the Tesla Roadster to the test regarding its range claims. The British Broadcasting Corporation is getting prosecuted by Tesla Motors for the false assertions the program had in it after the episode aired, The Guardian reports. The Roadsters are intended to get over 200 miles on an electric charge although the Tesla Roadster only ran for 55 miles according to “Top Gear” host Clarkson. The “Top Gear” crew was shown in the show pushing the vehicle from the “Top Gear” test track as the Roadster supposedly had motor and brake problems. Tesla isn’t amused.

Tesla Motors refuses to admit truth

The Roadsters never really ran out of charge on the “Top Gear” episode, Tesla claims. Neither of the cars lent for the show ever got down below 25 percent, Tesla claims. USA Today reports that Tesla monitored the 2 automobiles being lent for the episode. Tesla also asserts the brakes didn’t fail on one vehicle as the show claimed, however a fuse controlling a component in the braking system failed, and the brakes would still have been sound. During the episode, host Clarkson did praise the Tesla Roadster as “an electric vehicle you would really want to buy,” and for being able to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds with “a motor the size of a watermelon, with one moving part.” Tesla really just wants the show to stop airing although it does not want much in monetary damages. Forbes states that Tesla has been angry for a while over the show but did not start legal proceedings until the concern of the claims in the show stopped being addressed by BBC.

Trouble in the past for hosts

“Top Gear” has been in lots of controversy in the past. The hosts of the show are known for the crude comments made while the majority is upset about other aspects of the show. The hosts include James Might, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. This show is just like every other automotive TV program. It wants the cars with horsepower that guzzle a lot of gas. There are over 300 million individuals in the world that watch “Top Gear.” About 6 million of them are from Britain, states Bloomberg.

Tom Cruise Leads The Series 15 Top Gear Lap Time

Tom Cruise’s Lap In Top Gear Series 15 ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPGOdnDoHrY)

In the recent top gear episode of series 15 featured Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Like all the previous celebrities featured in Top Gear they had to do a lap too. It has now become more of a tradition since it started. It actually has started to get very competitive. This car reviews ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.carpress.co.uk/car-reviews/) program is now one of the most watched TV programs in the UK. This is one show where celebrity can drive without fear and have a fantastic time with the hosts.

Both Tom and Cameron tried to beat the fastest time and also seemed like they had a great time. Before Tom and Cameron got in the car the leader board had Rupert Grint at the top. Cameron Diaz was the first to go and did a fantastic lap including an awesome turn in the most difficult turn of the lap where you have to stay inside the lines. Though I have to tell you she did swear a lot and probably didn’t realise it was getting broad casted on BBC. after the lap she became the fastest on the leader board after a lap time of 1 minute 45 seconds and 2 milliseconds. Cameron as usual looked stunning even when she was wearing a helmet as Jeremy Clarkson mentioned on the show.

Then it was the top gun start Cruise, who started well. He had a gear problem or two but happens when you don’t drive manual cars in US. At the end of the lap he even drove the car in two wheels as the left hand side of the car in the air. Jokingly Jeremy mentioned I am glad you are alive after that trick. It was good to see a reasonable car driven like a star. Then came the moment to find out how he did, his lap time was 1 min 44 secs and 2 milliseconds, a second faster than Cameron who is now in second position.

It’s good to see people who normally drive stunning cars drive family cars like Alfa Romeo cars ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.carpress.co.uk/alfa-romeo) or Volkswagen cars ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.carpress.co.uk/volkswagen) or ford cars.
