Fawlty Towers In Torquay

surely most of the people out there know what Fawlty Towers is? One of the best British sitcoms if not the best starring John Cleese se as the hilarious Basil Fawlty, Prunella Scales as Sybil Fawlty and of course who could forget Andrew Sachs as Manuel! One of the big questions that always get asked is why did Cleese and Booth (played Polly) decide it was best to have this set in Torquay?

Experience

With programmes like this one you will find that people base things a lot on the experiences that they have had and this one is no different. In fact Cleese based his own character on a hotel owner that he had spotted when staying in a hotel on Torquay when filming with the people from the Monty Python team.

In May 1970 the team booked to stay in the Gleneagles hotel and when filming on location Cleese became interested in the Hotel owner and the behaviour he had towards his guests. John Cleese actually quotes much later on as “the most marvellously rude man I’ve ever met”. One of the things Cleese saw was the owner throwing a timetable at a guest asking about bus times and another was him taking Eric Idles briefcase out into the garden because he though a bomb was in it. (There was a ticking alarm clock in it). In case you did not realise, this is the real life Basil Fawlty and after the pythons left Cleese and Booth stayed behind to further research into the character.

In the end there is no way that you are going to be visiting a hotel like this when it comes to Torquay, in fact they have some fantastic hotels there nowadays. It is worth thinking about one of those spa breaks ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.tlh.co.uk/aztec-spa/aztec-spa-breaks.asp) or Torquay holidays ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.tlh.co.uk/) when it comes to this as it is something that people enjoy. Is it too early to think about Christmas hotels Torquay ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.tlh.co.uk/breaks-activities/christmas-holidays/)?

Have a great time when you are there!

Characters From Fawlty Towers

Most people out there know that Fawlty Towers is an amazing sitcom and if not one of the best, the best to ever be shown in the UK, did you know the series was also based in Torquay?. Although you would certainly not find a hotel like this in Torquay and it is a place that you would enjoy spa breaks ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.tlh.co.uk/aztec-spa/aztec-spa-breaks.asp) and hotels in Devon ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.tlh.co.uk/) this is a programme where knowing all of the characters from the sitcom is certainly worth the time and you need to watch it if you have never seen it before.

Basil Fawlty

John Cleese is of course the actor behind this ingenious character and based it on a hotel manager he spotted when staying at a Torquay hotel in 1970. Well Basil is of course the manger of the towers and his goal is to make the hotel a lot higher in the class that it appeals too, the problem is, he has a very big lack of patience and a high temper and can never seem to get on with his guests or his staff members. he seems to think he is the boss and charge of everything which I guess in a way is true but he is pretty scared of his wife and he will back down if she mentions his name.

Sybil Fawlty

The wife of Basil, played by Prunella Scales is energetic and petite. She lets Basil run the hotel whilst mostly talking to her friends over the telephone. She seems to come in and stop Basil right in the middle of one of his schemes and always manages to put him down.

Manuel

My favourite character, played by Andrew Sachs, is a Spanish waiter who means well but is very dis-organised and is always being picked on by Basil Fawlty. with this I am actually talking both physical and mental abuse i.e. a frying pan to the head.

Torquay is actually a great place to go to and if you want to take your Christmas holidays ^(http://www.indiefilmhouse.com/goto/http://www.tlh.co.uk/breaks-activities/christmas-holidays/) then you need to do it!
