News that draws more attention is not always 100% factual. Information released in mass media has concerned parents for a number of years. To say video games are the main cause of violence in youth would be incorrect. Public records show that a correlation between video games and violence is a myth. PS1 (or Play Station One) video gaming console was released by Sony in the early 1990′s, with the very popular, extremely violent game, Grand Theft Auto (version 1) released shortly thereafter. With people between ages 14-24, it is believed that they are more susceptible to violence if they see it through video games. Video games are generally blamed for any violent disturbance in society.

Contrary to the hype spread by the major media outlets, there is absolutely no correlation between violent video game playing and actual crimes. Statistics by law enforcement agencies prove mass media to be false in their claims. It is quite funny that the more violent video games are released, the more a crime rate decreases or remains constant. Media’s primary cause is to allure an audience; video games are an easy way to accomplish this because of their popularity.

Ratings are the main cause of false data being released.  Each major news outlet competes for ratings against each other by garnering the largest percentage of the viewing audience. Parent’s pay more attention to the news than anyone else. It is easy to attract parent viewers when discussing things that may have a direct influence on children. Information is based on a general thought or opinion, not statistical data.

Also, many child psychologist give their personal opinions on video games and can influence a crowd of people. It is important to find true data from the Bureau of Statistics to show that video games are not the direct cause of crime in the United States.
